Dr. Helen Lewis

Dr Helen Lewis is Associate Professor of Education in the Department of Education and Early Childhood Studies at Swansea University.

Helen is a qualified teacher who has worked across the early years and primary sectors, as well as having over 20 years’ experience in teacher education.

She combines her love of animals and interest in education in her research, which focuses on animal-assisted education. She has a particular expertise in those contexts which involve dogs, exploring how schools consider the wellbeing of the dogs alongside that of the pupils.

Helen runs a module for undergraduate students on ‘Animals in Education’. She has a Canine Assisted Education Specialist qualification from the University of Denver and has completed training in Animal-Assisted Play Therapy©.

She has written widely in the field, with publications including journals, books, podcasts, research reports, keynote speeches and presentations at international conferences.

Helen shares her home with 3 dog and 2 cats, and her dogs Carlo, Scarlet and Obie are involved in her work with students in the university.
